No account, and your choices stay on your device

There is nothing to sign up for. Your bookmarks, the brands and keywords you follow, the publications you hide, your home time zone and the beep setting are kept in your browser's own storage on your device. They are not sent to us unless you turn on alerts (below), and clearing your browser's data for this site removes them.

Alerts

If you turn on alerts, your browser gives us a push address for your device, along with the keys to encrypt messages to it. We store that address with the brands and keywords you follow and the publications you have hidden, because the server has to know what to alert you about. The alert itself travels through your browser maker's push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla), encrypted so that service cannot read it. Turn alerts off and we delete the address and your followed terms from our server; an address your browser reports as expired is deleted the same way.

What our server sees

When you load a page or search, your browser sends an ordinary web request. The site runs on Cloudflare, which processes those requests, including your IP address, to deliver the page and protect the site from abuse, and keeps standard logs for a limited time. Your searches, and the terms you follow, are sent to our server to find matching articles. We do not store them with anything that identifies you.

Images and links

Lead images are loaded directly from each publication's own servers, so the publication sees a request for its image. Your browser is told not to send the address of this site with that request. Tapping a card takes you to the publication's site, where its own privacy policy applies.

Advertising

Today the advertising spaces show our own messages and no advertising code runs. Before any third-party advertising starts, this page will be updated to name the provider and what it collects, and readers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland will be asked for consent first.

Fonts

The headline typeface is loaded from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when it delivers the font file.
